Il Campanile de San Marco

The first tower was a lighthouse and dated back to 1173. It was restored in the early 16th century as we se it now (98,6m high); however it collapsed in 1902 and the reconstruction was completed ten years later.

Ahh, Venice, a favorite place to visit. I always enjoy my visits to Venice and it is so fun to walk the narrow passageways to see what you can see. Great food and ambience. And nothing beats sitting at St. Mark's Square listening to music and watching the people go by. I really want to go to Venice during Carnivale. Maybe we could get a City Daily Photo group to go there one of these years as it is much more fun to go during Carnivale and the photo opportunities would be priceless! Thanks for your comments on our travel site regarding the new Morocco photos we posted today. We work hard to get those people shots.

"Que c'est triste Venice..." segundo a cancao do Charles Aznavour. Mas Veneza e tudo menos triste, ele, Aznavour, falava "des amours mortes", nos falamos da beleza, do bulicio, das camadas de historia, do requinte, da elegancia. As suas fotos sao maravilhosas, sobretudo da vista la de cima. Belissimo posto.

I was surprised when you said this had been a lighthouse as it doesn't look like a traditional lighthouse -- or at least what I think is traditional.

Certainly is a striking piece of architecture!

I hope there was an elevator?

That shot from the top is spectacular!
