Robben Island

As seen from the Table Mountain, Cape Town, South Africa.
Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in this former prison colony under Apartheid.

This brings back many memories!!! We took a trip to Robben Island in 1990. Mandela had left just shortly before. It was quite a visit. There were three busloads of us and of course we could not leave until everyone was ready and the boat was waiting for us. By this time the drivers had put back a few more drinks than they should have done and the bus ride back to the boat was more than scary. One bus somehow started a fire in it, thankfully not ours. We will never forget it is well etched on our minds!!! Diane

Wow, those are terrific photos. Must have been very difficult for Mandela. Doesn't look like an easy place to escape from!

Beautiful place, terrific captures, but such a sad history! Hope you've had a great holiday weekend, JM!

Seems so strange. Such a horrible thing in such a beautiful place.

Stunning pictures of South Africa! Beautiful and calm from afar but alas, not so much up close to picture its history! Cheers and have a wonderful day!

Truly beautiful. I guess you must have used a good wide-angle lens.

Your photos remind me that I want to read more about this man who endured more misery than most and yet with wisdom and even good humour accomplished amazing feats. He is history's greats.

What a shame and a waste his imprisonment was. A remarkable man.
