Muhammad Ali (1769-1849) was a worthy successor to the Mamlukes and Turks. He is buried beneath a white marble cenotaph, behind a bronze grill at the mosque named after him in Cairo, Egypt.
The above photo shows just one fourth of the grill

How extremely grand! I am glad they provide the mantles, it is irksome to see people improperly dressed. "When in Rome . . . etc".
Awesome! And what terrific captures, JM! I agree with the mantles and feel that people should respect the cultures that they visit.

Great captured JM! Really like this shots!
Have a nice week! ; )
That is amazing and I really like the idea of the mantles. It means that people will not be stopped from going if not dressed in the correct way. Diane
This leaves me wordless... It's huge... It's impressive... It's...
God bless you!

Wow! So beautiful with all the gold and lights. Thank you for visiting my garden :-)
What a magnificent place - so grand and ornate!
Esta última foto, com as luminárias, está fantástica! Muito sedutor este ambiente.
Wow.Very ornate design. And the chandeliers are glorious !
And everyone has a camera! Fascinating! The intricacies of religion are always of interest ... but I thought Muhammed Ali, while retired from boxing, was still alive in the U.S.
(I know, it's a silly comment, but as you know, sometimes I can't help myself!)
Have a nice week!
Is that inside the tomb? It sure is huge.
Wow! What an impressive tomb. He obviously wasn't poor. ;)
@diane b: The tomb is behind the golden grill on top, inside the mosque.
The last photo almost suggests a grand ballroom! The lighting is exquisite but the attention to ornate detail in the grill amazes me! Fascinating post!
What an astonishing monument to a man, or anyone for that matter. Thank you for sharing.
A ballroom was in my mind, too, with those magnificent chandeliers. I cannot imagine seeing all that glittering gold!
An ornate and wondrous place.
The lights in the second and third photo are amazing.... great pics!
Very dramatic.
Amazing pictures as always. What a stunning place to be buried.

Mais um tumulo...

A cultura egípcia é tão tradicional e conservadora (no sentido moralista), como enigmática e fascinante…
É um território com uma simbologia histórica impar…
Nice details of an not so known building. Well done
very opulent. so glad they allow photography as there's plenty of details to be photographed.
