The Dance of the Flyers involves five men, they represent the five earthly directions: the four cardinal points and straight up, from earth to heaven. It consists of dance and the climbing of a 30 meter pole from which four of the five participants then launch themselves tied with ropes to descend to the ground. According to myth, the ritual was created to ask the gods to end a severe drought in pre-Hispanic times.

This looks amazing, but also really dangerous. Do accidents happen often?
What an amazing and historic spectacle. It's nice to see other cultures.
When we went to the Cherokee Indian festival in North Carolina last summer we saw them do this dance. I took many pictures even though it was getting dark. I’ll get them and do a post on it sometimes. They climbed all the way to the top and did a prayer first. This dance was something to see.
No...nobody in their right mind would do this! Sheesh! But your photographs of these people are quite beautiful!
