Wow, incredible time this must have taken to carve these pillars! Don't know where this is, but my son just came back from 3 weeks in India - New Delhi was on his tour- was so excited about the Himalayans in the North.
Spectacular! It looks amazingly well preserved. I hope you took detailed pictures of the designs. They almost look like ivory carvings to me! What a find!
For some reason I cannot get enough of carved surfaces. This has a nice balance and elegance, but I think I'd like it even if it didn't. Were you on a staircase?

[My couple shot was definitely taken in the Palace District, but perhaps not quite in Durbar Square... not sure how far that extends.]
