Dina, this cemetery is AMAZING! It contains 4691 vaults, all above ground, of which 94 have been declared National Historical Monuments by the Argentine government and are protected by the state. Unfortunatelly I was definitely not inspired in photographic terms when I visited the place as, apart from Eva Peron's tomb I have previously posted, this is the only shot I took and it surely doesn't make justice to the site.
I remember seeing this cemetery on a TV program once. It's simply amazing. I've experienced the same remorse in remembering places I've seen before I became a photographer.
I do believe I've seen photos of this place before. It's just incredible to see all these huge, expensive monuments to dead people who in their present state couldn't care less! :-)
I really like the way you composed this, leading the eye through the gate and down the aisle!
My son used to live just a couple of blocks from the Recoleta Cemetery, and we visit it each time we go to Buenos Aires to visit him. We have taken lots of photos of the monuments in the cemetery. It is like a city of masoleums, but is also a sculpture garden.

I saw another post on cemeteries today and commented on how interesting photo ops one can find there. I believe it was a post on the cemetery in Prague. I am becoming more and more interested in going to try it out myself! anni
It's interesting to me that this cemetery also names the residential area. And Recoleta is THE preferred neighborhood in Buenos Aires. Cool shot, Jose.
Aren't cemeteries fascinating...it is as if the dead wanted still to show their social status...this being said you come across fantastic architecture as proven in your post!
This reminds me of the cemeteries in New Orleans. I love seeing how cemeteries are different in different places. You wouldn't typically find one like this in N. America. Love how it does seem to be like a little city.
Wow! That's an amazing cemetery! When I see stuff like this I wonder what happened to all those artist who made this stuff? It's a shame if these arts are lost. I can see why it is a national treasure. It is an outdoor museum as well as a place to honor loved ones who are no longer with us here on earth...
Recoleta Cemetery is new to me, but I would find it hard to meander through. Are there any trees or bushes or a blade of grass or three?
I agree that the mausoleums are impressive, but to see them all in a row like this, cheek by jowl, sort of lessens the impact of the death of the individual human being.
It does not surprise me, Jose, that you only took 2 photographs that day.

This looks like such an amazing cemetery. I really want to get there one day (as a visitor of course).
I guess that few cemeteries make it to become a tourist attraction... This one is remarkable!
