Humayun was the second Mughal emperor who ruled present day Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of northern India. The mausoleum was comissioned by his widow nine years after his death (1556).
Below are the nearby Isa Khan's tomb and mosque. Isa Khan was an Afghan noble who fought the Mughal Empire.

These are incredible! And what egos these folks and their families must have had. I suppose they figured they were so important something grand like any of these would be appropriate as a memorial to their grandeur! :-)

Jose, do you know if any of these mausoleums have been damaged in the conflicts in the area, especially in Afghanistan? I guess I am thinking of the first photograph mainly.
The difference between the lives of the wealthy and the lives of the poor is a gulf that can never be bridged.
@Julie: When it comes to Afghanistan we think of Bin Laden, rocky mountains and dust, but the country is much more than that. I'm sure many wonders have been lost but, unfortunatelly we know nothing about it with the exception of the amazing 6th century Bamiyan Buddha's statues destroyed on purpose by the Taliban in 2001.

A wonder associated with Afghanistan but actually in Delhi! Amazing integration of Persian and Indian influences! The facade patterns are fascinating in all these buildings!
