To zoom or not to zoom

Regarding the previous post I was asked how 'super' the zoom must be to get close-ups of the wildlife. Well, here at MalaMala (South Africa) you can be so close to the animals, you almost don't need one. I think the photos speak for themselves.

Hi JM :

Very daring feat. You are so close to these wild animals. The jeep doesn't look fully covered. What will happen if they attacked you?

Very wonderful and rare photos of courage and adventure.

Best wishes :)

...and not without some risk. I wonder how often that gun is used.

Good photos, in particular the last one.

Joseph and Per,
the animals are so used to the jeeps they will never attack you, but you can't speak loud or stand up as they face the car and people has a whole thing. The rangers are very experienced people who have made this for a living and know nature as nobody else. My tour guide never shot his gun in 7 years and only had two less pleasant experiences, one with an elephant, the other with a giraffe because, he admits, he really got TOO close, making those animals feel unsafe and they have just reacted to intimidate.

Absolutely wonderful pictures JM. I especially love the leaopards and Mala Mala is just the place to go to see them. I worked as a tour guide to Kruger National Park for 17 years then at a private lodge for another 5. I loved the life!!
