The Ngorongoro Crater


This is one of the largest calderas in the world (20 kms wide) and one of Africa's best known wildlife-viewing areas. Within its walls are an amazing variety of animals and vegetation including grasslands, swamps, forests, salt pans and a freshwater lake.
The second pic shows about one third of the crater and below are the Sopa Lodge bungallows with the most stunning view.

Unguja (Zanzibar island) I

When the british colony of Tanganica became independent (1961), the Archipelago of Zanzibar joined the inland territory and a new country was born, named Tanzania. Unguja is the main island, at about one hour distance by boat from Dar-es-Salam.

Stone Town

As ilhas que constituem o Arquipélago de Zanzibar, tiveram a sua origem em alguns atóis do Oceano Índico, perto da costa da actual Tanzânia. Por este motivo, a capital situada na ilha de Unguja, deve o seu nome, Stone Town, ao facto de ter sido construída, quase exclusivamente, com rocha de coral. Fustigada todos os anos por chuvas intensas durante três meses seguidos, a manutenção dos edifícios torna-se muito difícil, o que faz com que a cidade apresente um permanente estado de degradação, que acaba por fazer parte do seu próprio carisma. Localizada em plena rota das especiarias, a mistura de culturas remonta há séculos, sendo notórias as diferentes influências nos padrões arquitectónicos, onde se misturam os estilos árabe, hindú, europeu e africano.
Em primeiro plano, o 'Old Fort', construído em 1700 pelos árabes omanitas, como defesa contra os portugueses.
Uma das cerca de 600 portas originais ainda existentes, ex-libris da cidade.Beit el Ajaib (House of Wonders), o edifício mais alto em toda a costa da África oriental, à época da sua construção (1883), onde residia o sultão Barghash.
