Danza de los Voladores

Mexico City

The Dance of the Flyers involves five men, they represent the five earthly directions: the four cardinal points and straight up, from earth to heaven. It consists of dance and the climbing of a 30 meter pole from which four of the five participants then launch themselves tied with ropes to descend to the ground. According to myth, the ritual was created to ask the gods to end a severe drought in pre-Hispanic times.

Palenque

Palenque is a Maya archeological site with about five hundred buildings surrounded by dense forest near the Usumacinta River in the state of Chiapas, Mexico.
The earliest occupation of the site dates to 100 BC, but it became a major population center only at about 600 AD and all construction has ceased by 800 AD.

Mitla

Mitla (state of Oaxaca, Mexico) is famous for its arqueological site with the most exquisit patterns on the walls. Its history is very complex as it has been occupied by several cultures, having some notorious Zapotec influence in the early years (around 200 AD).

This spanish church, seen of photo #3, was built on top of some other ruins.

Las Casas de San Cristobal

San Cristobal de Las Casas (Chiapas), Mexico


Former capital of the state of Chiapas, the city is located in the central highlands at an elevation of approximately 2100 m. It is the third-largest community in this state, birth of the Zapatista political movement, whose lider is Comandante Marcos who allways standed for the Indian rights.
The city was named after Bartolomé de Las Casas, a spanish priest who defended the rights of the native americans and became the first bishop of Chiapas.

Sian Ka'an


A Reserva Biosfera de Sian Ka'an situa-se na costa leste do México ; com 2400 km2, é uma das maiores áreas protegidas do país.
Constituída por floresta, mangais, lagunas, canais e cenotes de águas cristalinas, é possível a observação duma fauna extraordinariamente variada, seja ela terrestre ou aquática.

Na linguagem Maia, Sian Ka'an significa 'o lugar onde o céu nasceu'...Ponto de encontro duma lagoa com o Mar da Caraíbas.'Caravela Portuguesa' (Physalia physalis), uma das mais venenosas alforrecas; não tem movimento próprio, flutua à superfície das águas, empurrada pelo vento, com os seus tentáculos por baixo (podem chegar aos 30 metros), sempre prontos a envolver um peixe para a sua alimentação.
A 'caravela portuguesa' faz parte da dieta das tartarugas marinhas, imunes ao veneno.
Em inglês, chama-se "Portuguese man o'war" (man-of-war aplica-se para designar um navio armado).
